Al was a truly great and lovely man and I have wonderful memories of him and his very special family. He was so welcoming, hospitable and kind during my visit to New Jersey in 1990 and visits to Lake Placid. He taught me to cross-country ski and to juggle!
Years later it was a delight to welcome him and Jini to our home in Scotland and to join in larger family gatherings with my parents and siblings and family. My late father was extremely fond of Al, and they shared a love of the outdoors on both sides of the Atlantic.
My condolences to all the family on the passing of such a wonderful man.

My sincerest sympathy for your loss and the loss to all of us that knew him. My earliest memory of Al was a cross-country ski trip, just the two of us, up the Whiteface Veteran's Memorial Highway on 1/11/2005. It was one of my first trips as a hike leader for the North Woods ADK Mt. Club Chapter, of which Al & Jini were members. I remember that trip now as if it were yesterday, and I will always remember him that way.

Jini and the children:
My first memory of Alan is watching him discuss with my father how to assemble a color TV from a Heathkit.
I think I was around 6; so he would have been 16.
Over the years, he taught by example, that:
you don’t have to be tough to be strong;
there’s no need to be argumentative to be persuasive;
and quiet competence earns lifelong respect.
He was a wonderful person.
