Obituary of William S. Carey

William S. Carey, 97, of 11101 Route 9, Champlain, NY, passed away on September 4th after a lengthy illness at his home -- his loving family in attendance.  He was born in Chateaugay, NY, on October 17, 1920, the son of William M. and Margaret Rogers Carey of Chateaugay and Bloomingdale, NY.

 

Bill graduated from Chateaugay High School in 1938.  He married his High School sweetheart, Janet Ann LaFountain in 1943.  He was a member of the 31st Division 104th Combat Engineers stationed in the Philippines.  A member of St. Mary’s Church in Champlain, he served as Trustee for several years.  He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Francis X. Chagnon Council 3525, in Champlain.  He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 0767, Champlain.  He worked as a miner in the iron mines in Lyon Mountain and the copper mines in South Strafford, Vt.  In 1949, he came to work at Sheridan Iron Works in Champlain until 1983 when he retired.

 

He took pride in remodeling his home to fit his family of nine children.  Bill and his family enjoyed the camp that he built on Chateaugay Lake, in 1971. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends, as well as dancing with the North Country Squares, the Northern Lights and Moonshine Squares.   

 

He is survived by his loving family; his wife, Janet, his children, Patricia Carey, Champlain, Kate and Stan Desautels, West Chazy, Bill and Anne Carey and, Dan and Gail Carey of Rouses Point, Rita and Mike Fay, Palm Coast, and Jim and Kathy Carey of Champlain. 

 

He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Georgiana Mary Carey in 1963, son, Francis LaFountain Carey in 2012, and son, John Thomas Carey in 2017.   Bill is survived by 21 Grandchildren, 40 Great-Grandchildren, 4 Great-Great Grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

Calling hours will be at M. B. Clark Funeral Home, 196 Elm Street, Champlain, NY, on Friday, September 7th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled on Saturday, September 8th at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church, 86 Church Street, Champlain, NY.  There will be a gathering of family and friends at the Knights of Columbus, Champlain, following the mass.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Mary’s Church, Champlain, NY.
